This year I braved the British weather and ran another Painting Holiday in Cornwall. We stayed in a lovely house in Penzance called Carn Brea, which was handy for local parks, shops, galleries, inns and eateries. We had a lovely big table in the kitchen for  indoor painting sessions and I was well prepared for rainy weather, having planned lessons and brought lots of reference materials with me. I gave tuition indoors each morning, then we ventured out painting in the afternoons.

My painting guests were Maureen, Maxine, Pauline and Gwyneth. Maureen and Maxine were beginners whilst Pauline and Gwyneth had both painted before. For Pauline it would be her first experience of painting out in the fresh air.

Close to our accommodation was Penlee House Gallery and Gardens. We spent a lovely day painting in the Garden of Remembrance, which is superbly planted with specimens collected from all over the world.

We saved our visit to the exhibition at Penlee House for a rainy day, of which we had several. The exhibition features fine examples of Newlyn School art, local copper in Art Nouveau style and bronze age finds from the local area.

The weather perked up and we made it to Marazion to paint St Michaels Mount.

We had a wonderful view from the gardens by the seashore

Zennor was also on our agenda and after tea and huge slabs of home made cake in the Backpackers we painted the lovely church, the Tinners Arms and village houses.

In the church we found the famous Zennor Mermaid, an ancient carving on the end of a pew.

The Tinners Arms for a drink - warm, cosy and friendly.

Zennor is a small village along the road between St Just and St Ives which offers spectacular views of the coastline. On the moors one omes across these gloomy but very atmospheric disused mines.

We spent some time in Newlyn one morning, looking at the Art Gallery, smaller galleries and a wonderful jewellery shop, before heading for Mousehole Harbour.

Mousehole was lovely as ever as the sun came out to shine on us. we painted in the harbour, ate fish and chips from the fantastic chippy, then explored the little backstreets, galleries and shops.

Back in Penzance we went to the Union Inn for Gypsy Jazz night - marvellous music and a warm atmosphere.

Our day trip to Cape Cornwall was fantastic, hot and sunny - like August should be!
We perched outside the fishermens huts in Priest Cove to paint the Cape, the cove and the shining ocean.

We went back up to the top car park for tea and Cornish ice creams and painted from there too.

In the afternoon sun the ocean sparkled

A perfect end to our Painting Holiday. Everyone had learnt a lot and had enjoyed painting this inspiring part of England.
