 Back to Dubrovnik Holiday 2007

My guests this year were Ms Phillippa W, who came all the way from New Zealand and Mr John H from Cardiff, Wales. Both guests were keen to explore Watercolour.
John was a keen pen and ink sketch artist and Phillippa had been producing vibrant acrylic paintings.
When my guests are inexperienced I like to send them home as artists, and when my guests are already artists I like to send them home 'different' - with new skills, a new medium, a new technique or a new way of seeing. so my challenge this year was to get my guests out of their comfort zones and into brand new territory!
We stayed at Mali Raj guesthouse again, in lovely Zaton Bay

John was happy to be on a real holiday - he usually lectures onboard cruise ships

Pippa has run her own Painting Holidays, and was happy to be a student for once!

The water was beautiful and inviting as ever

and there was a new family member to welcome us - a Mali Cat - real name Shrek!

He let me sleep on a corner of the bed - he had the middle bit of course!

We went to paint in the Old City Harbour - one of my favourite places on Earth

John and Pippa painted the harbour from Cafe Revellin

The Old City is a delight to explore and sketch

There is always somewhere to perch and paint

there's a pictureque view down every alleyway

We really enjoyed exploring and sketching here

It was thirsty work, but John found a helpful sign

We followed the arrows, which led us to
BAR BUZA!

Clinging to the cliffs outside the City Walls, a wonderfully friendly bar

with fantastic views or the sea and Lokrum Island

We watched people leaping from the rocks. This girl took 20 minutes to jump,
we all cheered as she finally leapt off into the blue

The old city see many tourists during the daytime.
At night the locals come out to play. The Stradun main street has a wonderful atmosphere at night, its marble pavement has been finely polished over the centuries by millions of feet.
It appears to be wet, but is just very shiny!

We took a boat trip to the Islands of Klocep, Sipan and Lopud onboard the Zvir.

We saw the multicoloured strata of the Croatian landscape

Sudurad Harbour on pretty Sipan

and lovely Lopud

Back in Zaton we had a power cut over the whole bay.
In keeping with the spooky yet cosy atmosphere, John told us Eskimo ghost stories!

Darko gave us some locally made drinks - very warming and very strong!

We sketched from the Old City walls, a great way to see Dubrovnik!

John sketching under the Croatian flag

The colours and textures are lovely for artists

There are sentry boxes framing perfect little scenes

and fantastically dramatic views of the sea and rocky coastline

I am running another Painting Holiday here next year - come and join us!
